Abstract

Title:Guidelines for Planning Automated Parking System : master thesis
Abstract:
Our personal transport habits change with each passing year, accompanied by a steady increase in the desire for freedom. The increased share of passenger cars among motorised road traffic was therefore expected. In the past, motorised vehicles were put centre stage, especially in city centres. Nowadays, the impetus is on sustainable mobility, and focusses on people themselves. This means passenger vehicles command less attention. It is important to realise that our habits will not change overnight. The same is true for the number of passenger vehicles on our roads. Parking areas represent the most significant challenge, as a large share of these surfaces are given to stationary vehicles which take up valuable space. A new approach to the planning of parking areas for stationary traffic is therefore more than warranted. Slovenia currently does not have guidelines, rules, standards, and other regulations that would help urban planners to design and engineer automated parking systems. The aim of this master’s thesis is to establish guidelines that facilitate the first design phases of automated parking systems. To ensure efficient operation, a few conditions must be met. We have therefore set out a list of basic requirements to be considered: selecting the right type of automated parking system, the advantages and disadvantages of various motor vehicles, vehicle and parking space dimensions, as well as the characteristics of driving to and from the parking system. The thesis also presents four practical examples of how to place automated parking systems onto existing parking areas for stationary traffic.
