The thesis deals with the professional fire brigade and its development in the City of Ljubljana. The first professional fire brigade in Slovenia, the Ljubljana Fire Brigade, is presented as an organization with a holistic approach within the complexity paradigm. In addition to the role, importance and challenges of the professional fire service in the local environment, the thesis focuses on the experiences of professional firefighters. Individuals are formally employed and receive financial payments for performing this service. Physicality, dynamism and technicality are at the forefront of professional firefighting, which further increases the motivation and attraction to pursue the chosen profession. In addition, there is the power to help and the social prestige of the profession, although care must be taken when understanding the latter. Today, despite the formal regulation of gender equality, the professional fire service is still a male domain.
