Abstract

Title:Motives for usage of user generated video content among children
Abstract:
Today's children are entering the internet space at an early age than ever before. They use the internet to watch videos online, play games, and connect with their peers through social media. However, watching videos takes the very top among the most popular activities kids do online. Resulting in sites like, YouTube, the world's largest online video-sharing platform, to experience a huge rise in popularity over the past few years, especially among children who like to watch vlogs, unboxing videos, Let’s play videos, challenges and tutorials. Because these types of videos are being created and published by ordinary people and not by big media houses, they are labelled as user-generated video content. Most parents are aware of the type of content their children like to watch online, showing desire to understand why their children choose the content they watch. I decided to focus my dissertation on this question as I realised, when reviewing literature, that not much of research has been done on this topic. By conducting in-depth interviews with 5 children, I came up with motives that children have for watching user-generated content.
