As part of this master’s thesis, we wanted to find out what type of wood roof is best for our climate. We wanted to find out how to ensure the best possible implementation of roofing through protection, modification, and detailed design techniques. Different types of traditional roofing that have been used throughout Slovenian history are presented. The techniques and traditions of shingle production in Slovenia are described in detail. Among other things, some general properties of wood, such as its natural resistance, are also mentioned. We have presented factors that cause degradation of wood. The durability of wood can be improved by various techniques. We have studied different methods and their effectiveness. We started the experimental work by preparing and protecting test specimens and test rigs. We selected the main test methods that we thought would give us the most reliable of data. We tested the water behaviour of a wooden roof using moisture monitoring. We also determined the colour changes, fungal susceptibility, roughness, and water contact angle of the samples exposed to weathering. Meanwhile, moisture performance tests were conducted in the laboratory. Water absorption during immersion and artificial precipitation was also determined in the laboratory. The analysis of the results showed that thermally modified wood combined with wax is the most effective combination for the protection of wooden roofs.
