Organic solvents are responsible for the majority of wastes created by chemical production facilities and thus for environmental pollution. With the use of nonconventional solvents comprising ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents and by using environment-friendly biological catalysts we can significantly lower the influence of industrial production on the
environment. Green solvents can be used in a wide range of applications, including enzymatic biotransformations. Ionic liquids are also interesting due to a large number of possible compounds, which offers us the possibility to tailor solvents for the specific
need. That property allows us to change them to the extent that they enable us to perform even biocatalytic reactions, which are not possible by the use of traditional organic solvents. For many enzymes, it is evident that the use of appropriate ionic liquid
or deep eutectic solvent instead of conventional solvents results in increased activity and often also in improved temperature stability.
