Abstract

Title:Infrastructure measures for a higher level of traffic safety on highways : master thesis
Abstract:
In the master's thesis we analysed the infrastructural measures which could increase traffic safety on the motorways. In the initial part of the thesis we researched the current state of traffic safety on Slovenian roads with an emphasis on expressways and motorways. Motorways are considered the safest out of all road categories, because fewer accidents happen on them, but the consequences of such accidents due to high speed driving are often serious injuries, or even fatalities. We examined the most common causes for traffic accidents on motorways and expressways and used the obtained data in subject thesis. In the next chapter we studied the selected infrastructural measures. We assessed the impact of each individual measure on the improvement of traffic safety, examined the already existing studies on the impact of the use of particular measure and tried to determine if latter is economically justified. In the last chapter we focused on the measure of hard shoulders, especially regarding its economic justification. Our goal was to confirm or reject the hypotesis that the costs of the construction of hard shoulders are economically justified because of the expected reduction in the number of traffic accidents and, consequently, lower costs connected to fewer traffic accidents. We made a cost-benefit analysis to prove it. In conclusion we gathered our findings and proposed the introduction of infrastructural measures for a higher level of traffic safety on motorways.
