The master's thesis is an in-depth field research of a two-year field work of a counselor in the field of work with victims of domestic violence. The research is supported by a review of literature both in the field of anthropological theories and the legal bases that have been established in different periods of development of legislation and the establishment of an institutional system of forms of assistance for women experiencing violence. It also analyses the specifics of domestic violence, understoods as a social phenomenon, and based on fieldwork, notes that domestic violence in Slovenia is usually classified in the domain of private, family life, and in some respects penetrates the public sphere through media, education and public awareness. Through the fieldwork, discovers ingrained stereotypes beliefs, belief and opinions that are historically, socially and culturally constructed. Constructions of domestic violence, however, influence the way legislation, state organizations, and other institutions define violence, which is reflected in the secondary victimisation of women seeking help to live without violence.
