Abstract

Note:
NASLOV: Fenomen ironije / IZVLEČEK: Magistrsko delo poskuša osvetliti pojav ironije in ga podrobneje definirati v slovenski literarni vedi.

Title:The phenomenon of irony - Irony in the works of Vitomil Zupan and Thomas Mann
Abstract:
This master's thesis tries to shed light on the problem of the phenomenon of irony and define it in more detail in Slovenian literary studies. It deals diachronically and synchronously with the types of irony and current typologies of irony. At the same time, it confirms the quality of the literary work of the Slovene writer Vitomil Zupan as ironic and points out the problem that due to the political and historical situation in Slovenia in the 20th century, he was not sufficiently recognizable or respected at home and abroad. To prove his quality, the world-famous German writer and master of irony, Thomas Mann, stands by his side. The novels analysed (Potovanje na konec pomladi, Igra s hudičevim repom, Levitan ) and Mann's novelle Smrt v Benetkah belong to the 20th century, the period of modernism, so one of the chapters of this thesis defines a modernist novel and its dimensions. The irony from the perspective of an unreliable first-person narrator who predominates in the narrative in modernism was analysed. In the novella, the irony from the point of view of an omniscient narrator was analysed. It was assumed that irony occurs in all narrative elements and motives, therefore they were roughly illuminated, but more attention was paid to the relationship of irony with (homo) eroticism (the relationship of the narrator/main character to men or women).

Keywords:irony, (homo) erotica, narrator, modernism, modernist novel
