Abstract

Title:Adapting socio-spatial aesthetic practices to the needs of people with dementia
Abstract:
Active aging of the population and changing structure of residents in institutional care homes repeatedly calls for the introduction of different thought patterns, which, in the light of modern home construction projects, follow trends dictated by factors of the aging process, especially the growing incidence of dementia. The atypical occurrence of dementia in the aging process seems to be a contradiction to the statement of the actual situation in society, both at the global level and in Slovenia. Diagnosis of dementia brings a complex life situation in which society is directly or indirectly involved at various levels. The family is primarily in-volved in such processes. The latter takes on the role of a key entity that decides on the transition of the patient to a particular institutional care. It is necessary to be fully aware that quality living at all ages is of primary importance for achieving empowered life. Achieving this is realized by taking into account aspects of dementia appropriate architecture, spatial equipment and human relations, based on understanding the specifics of dementia and problems that demented person is facing. Functionality at the architectural level alone is not sufficient to meet the factors of the operable entirety. All levels of the architectural, spatial and social aspects must be met accordingly.

Keywords:dementia, cognitive decline, architecture, quality residence, nursing homes.
