In this thesis we presented innovations that virtual technology brings to aerodrome air traffic control. We analyzed if a new concept could be effectively introduced to Slovenian international aerodromes. Firstly, the work of the airport air traffic controller and current operational methods in a conventional tower were presented on an example of Portorož aerodrome unit. This was followed by a presentation of the modern concept of virtual towers with an overview of remarkable applications that have been done abroad. In the practical part of the thesis, we analyzed reasons for the financial inefficiency of aerodrome control units and presented possible solutions. We have discussed the case of a multiple remote tower concept for services at Portorož and Maribor. Lastly, alternative solutions have been presented in terms of upgrading operational procedures, ergonomics and technical equipment at current facilities, which are recognized as an economically more viable solution, to achieve the same goal of operational efficiency.
