Following the severe floods in Central Europe in 2002, the European Union set up the EU Solidarity Fund as a (special) financial instrument to respond quickly, effectively and flexibly to emergencies, demonstrating solidarity with the people of regions affected by unpredictable natural disasters.
In the paper, within the framework of regional policy, we discussed the operation of the selected special instrument in the period 2002–2018, and its spatial dimension was mapped within the multiannual financial frameworks. Through geographical analysis, we examined the spatial characteristics and climatic challenges of the affected regions at EU level and analyzed those natural disasters that received the most financial assistance from the Fund.
