Abstract

Title:Physical abilities, academic distinction, and problem solving in primary and grammar school children
Abstract:
In this master's thesis we researched the link between physical abilities, academic distinction, and problem solving in elementary and grammar school children. The study included 61 elementary school children from Brežice elementary school, 30 girls and 31 boys, additionally, there were 60 secondary school children from Brežice grammar school, namely 31 girls and 29 boys. The data on physical abilities was collected from the results of the sports-education chart, the academic distinctions were gathered through a survey, and the problem solving ability was tested with the Slovenian fluid intelligence test called “Test nizov”. The gathered data was processed with the IBM SPSS Statistics package. The research focused on the differences in physical abilities, academic distinctions, and problem solving in elementary versus grammar school children and girls versus boys. Additionally, we researched the connection between the three variables in elementary and grammar school children. The result have shown that there are no significant statistic differences between them, however, there were some deviations with the grades in the Slovene language, and the results of the fluid intelligence test “Test nizov”, furthermore, grammar school children fared better in the physical test – sport-education chart. There were also no significant statistic differences between girls and boys. The main two differences were in the Slovene language grades where girls were more successful, and in the weekly physical-activity where boys were more proficient. The connections between physical abilities, academic distinction, and problem solving exists, however, the correlation coefficient is meager, thus the relation is weak.
