Abstract

Title:Verbal Suffix -ni- in Celje Urban Dialect from a Synchronic and Diachronic Perspective
Abstract:
The thesis proposes an alternative categorization of Slovene verbal suffixes into mono- and polymorphemic suffixes. Monomorphemic verbal suffixes consist solely of a theme vowel while polymorphemic suffixes may contain derivational morphemes as well. The verbal suffix -ni- is argued to be polymorphemic, composed of the semelfactive suffix -n and the theme vowel -i-. The empirical part presents morphological-phonological maps showing the dialectal correspondents to the standard suffix -ni-. Special emphasis is given to Central Styrian suffix -na-, which occurs in Celje urban dialect and forms the main topic of the empirical study, describing the usage and spread of this suffix, particularly in comparison to the mid Savinjska suffix --.

Keywords:morphology, verb, semelfactive, dialectal suffix, dialectal morphologial-phonological map
