In the final seminar paper we study the influence of branch schools on rural development in the Zasavje statistical region, based on existing studies from Slovenia and abroad (Czech Republic, New Zealand). We identified factors influencing the density of the school network, which are based on legislative framework. They do not take into account the multifunctional role of branch schools in rural development. We analyzed relationship between the branch school and the school district and displayed temporally-spatially dilution of the school network. By analyzing secondary sources (brochures on school anniversaries) and annual reports of parent schools, we confirmed the mentioned relations. The analysis of statistical data enables the comparison of the most contradictory school districts according to the demographic situation, which also represents the basis for a comparative analysis with the help of nine in-depth interviews about school districts Vače, Dobovec and Konjšica. There is a significant influence of human geography factors on density of the network of branch schools. The latter was most diluted in the 1970s. All interviewees share an opinion about the sense of responsibility towards the local branch school, as they believe that its presence contributes to the quality of living in rural places.
