Abstract

Title:
Bodysize heritability of Nephilingis cruentata
Abstract:
We examined intra-locus sexual conflict as an important aspect of evolution of sexual size dimorphism. The study included a few hundred individuals of a spider species Nephilengis cruentata (fam. Nephiliidae) and represents a preliminary study of a bigger survey of intra-locus sexual conflict research on Nephilingis cruentata taking place in a research program of Jovan Hadži institute of biology. Specimens were kept in a controled invironment. Their mass has been used as an estimator of their size. The results showed that females were 73-fold larger than males on average. The size of females has been strongly correlated with their genetic predisposition and maternal effects, while the size of males has been almost entirely dependant on the latter. Estimated value of cross-sex genetic correlation around 0 indicate resolved intra-locus sexual conflict in N. cruentata, therefore allowing future independant evolution of each sex size. Our results are in congriuty with previos studies on the filed indicating multiple changes in the ratio of the size of the sexes in the representsatives of the Nephilidae family during their evolutionary history.
