Abstract

Title:PHILOSOPHICAL ASPECT OF SUICIDE IN CHRISTIANITY AND JAPANESE CULTURE
Abstract:
In the thesis, I will discuss the suicide, the act with which a person takes his own life. In doing so, I will not focus on causes which influence the person to perform this action. I will focus on how people in general look at it. The view of suicide changed over the course of history. However, it also varies in different cultures and religions. On one hand, there is the Catholic Church, where suicide is considered a sin, as one of God's commandments forbids it. On the other hand, however, the Japanese share a different opinion. Everything there revolves around the work so any failure is thought of as shameful. Therefore, most people prefer to commit suicide rather than face the shame. Throughout history, there were various forms of suicide. Even though some are not very present today anymore, there are still individuals who execute them. One of the more interesting views on it is the philosophical one which, unlike Christianity which uniquely rejects it, is divided into some philosophers who reject it and others who approve of it. There are many views of suicide. However, we cannot say for sure what is right and what is not in this situation. Regardless of religion or culture, the human is a free being and no matter what the views are, he can still choose its own fate.
