Abstract
Izraz »masovni podatki« (angl. big data) je danes precej razširjen, čeprav je še vedno obdan z določeno konceptualno nejasnostjo. V diplomskem delu smo zato najprej obravnavali njegovo definicijo in terminologijo, vključno z možnim prevodi v slovenski jezik.

Title:Trends regarding usage of big data in social studies
Abstract:
Term “big data” has become a popular notion, despite certain conceptual vagueness. Therefore, in this diploma, we first discussed its definition and terminology, including possible translations into Slovene language. Next, we focused on the most important technical aspects related to specifications of software and hardware. We were particularly interested in the relationship between big data and social science research, especially in the question of whether big data might replace survey research. We also discussed trends in the field of ethical dilemmas that arise when working with big data. We paid special attention to the use of big data in in two exposed areas, in the field of market research and in the field of national statistical offices, which have recently been increasingly using big data in their work. In the empirical part, we conducted interviews with two experts who provide systematic response on our research questions. We concluded the diploma with the main findings regarding past and expected trends in this field.
