Abstract

Title:Society's attitude towards single-father families
Abstract:
The number of single-parent families is increasingly growing around the world and also in Slovenia. This diploma is about single-parent families and it is mainly focused on a single-father families, which occupy a minority position in such types of families. Despite the significant increase in the number of single-parent families, this topic is rarely being discussed. Single-parent families are still a burning issue when it comes to a social exclusion and weak economic capacity. Single fathers are also facing a less developed social network. Despite the growing acceptance of such types of family, single-father families are still facing stigmatization of society and various stereotypes. In the first part of my diploma thesis I have focused on the definition of single-parent families and its division, followed by the statistical data and the ratio of single-father families in Slovenia. Thesis is then followed by the socio-economic situation of a single-father families, the harmonization of professional and private life, the position of paternal single-parent families in society, the stereotypes that fathers of such types of families are facing and the public help and support for fathers in a single-parent family. The second part of this thesis is presenting the new fatherhood and active fatherhood, which is becoming increasingly popular, as fathers are geting more involved in the active raising of their children. This includes child care, the work they do at home, explanation what the role of the father in a single-parent family is and what is the share of responsibility of the children in the single-father family. Empirical part is about a qualitative research that shows the experiences of fathers of single-parent families and the challenges they are facing.
