Abstract
It is well known, that water, when heated above its saturation temperature, boils. Anyone can observe boiling by simply pouring the water into a cooking pot and placing it onto the stove. Despite its virtual simplicity, the boiling process is a complex phenomenon governed by many underlying heat and mass transfer mechanisms. In-depth study of boiling process requires information about bubble departure and footprint diameter, nucleation frequency, nucleation site density and nucleation site distribution. Acquiring this information usually takes a lot of time and manual work during the post-processing phase. Development of robust and fast data processing algorithms is therefore highly appreciated by the scientific community. In this work, we developed new algorithm to detect active nucleation sites based on the transient temperature fields obtained by high-speed IR camera during saturated boiling experiments on thin metal foil. Results show that this method offers a robust and rapid detection of active nucleation sites, which can be later implemented in a more complex image processing algorithms.
