A long term nursing at home in Slovenia is one of the solution for taking care of old people and, therefore, there is a need to investigate and analyse this type of nursing. Because of demographic changes, getting old is a topic that became actual nowadays. Population of old people that needs nursing or even special care, because of their immobility, and that wants to stay at home is increasing. While the number of active people or specialist that could take care for older people is decreasing. Formal or informal way of informing people about long term nursing in rural area is weak, which is one of the area that needs special attention and investigation. Therefore, in the first part of my diploma work I made a review about the current situation about old people population, demographic changes and the meaning of long term nursing of old people from the health care, social and residential point of view.
In the second part, I focused on problematic of demographic changes in small rural commune Lendava and its effect on long term nursing of the old people. I investigate the old people needs for a long term nursing in Lendava commune, the ups and downs that are brought to a family that are taking care for their older member, how are the needs addressed through a formal and informal care and what is the range on addressed needs and obstacles that are family facing with.
The research done in this diploma work is quantitative and descriptive, where I used questionnaire to collect data, which have been analysed using SPSS software.
In general, the needs of old people are health, in first place, security, warm and closeness of other people. The desire of old people is to take care for themselves as long as possible. Nowadays there is a challenge to adopt existing programmes and services for old people to the individual needs, which will satisfy them. To achieve this, we need to know individual needs, informing people of their rights and possibilities of support or help in their home town. However, the most important thing is to direct old people to search for a help that will satisfy their most important needs. This will improve their quality of life even in the old days.
