Abstract

Title:Program Excel as a tool for statistical evaluation of chemical analysis results
Abstract:
Chemical analyses are based on measurements. Statistics has a key role in their evaluation. We have to be able not only to analyse, but also to appropriately interpret the results and make decisions based on them. For evaluation of results of the analyses in diploma work we have used basic, mass-accessible, fast-learning, powerful and, above all, user-friendly software Microsoft Excel. The aim was to present the Excel’s add-ins Data Analysis and Solver, which are used for complex statistical analysis and optimization, to show how they work and what we can do with them. The use of Excel in chemistry is versatile, it is mainly used in analytical and physical chemistry, for solving linear and nonlinear equations, for statistical and graphical analysis, linear regression, optimization, and fitting to curves. We tried to show the usability through various examples from the literature. We have found out that such a simple to use program, as Excel, can process complex numerical data and actually satisfy the necessary calculations. It can offer fast, efficient and accurate solutions. With Excel we can save time, because input, analysis, data modification, and results are in the same program. In addition to a quick printout of the results, they are transparent and are automatically updated following the changes of input data. We also learn about some of the weaknesses of Excel the we need to be aware of.
