Abstract
Terapija z delci je vrsta zdravljenja raka, pri kateri se rakavo tkivo obseva s hitrimi protoni ali težjimi ioni. V primerjavi s konvencionalno radioterapijo povzroča manj škode v zdravih tkivih. Naprava za terapijo z delci med drugim vsebuje sistem za dostavo doze, ki skrbi za usmerjanje žarka in nadzorovanje količine dostavljene doze. Izdelali smo logiko za obdelavo meritev prejetih z detektorja žarka. Žarek hitrih nabitih delcev v detektorju žarka povzroči ionizacijo plina, kar omogoča določevanje karakteristik in pozicije žarka. Izdelana logika, ki se izvaja na čipu FPGA, od detektorja žarka prejema surove podatke in iz njih izračunava pozicijo in širino žarka ter hitrost dostavljanja doze. Izračunane lastnosti žarka so potrebne za pravilno usmerjanje žarka po volumnu obsevanega tumorja in zagotavljanje pravilne količine dostavljene doze. Končano logiko smo testirali s testnimi strukturami. Logika deluje znotraj zastavljenih zahtev, a jo bomo na čipu FPGA testirali šele, ko bo končana preostala logika sistema za dostavo doze in namenski simulator.

Title:
Beam monitor measurements processing in a particle therapy dose delivery system
Abstract:
Particle therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses fast protons or heavier ions to irradiate cancerous tissue. It causes less collateral damage in healthy tissue compared to conventional radiotherapy. One part of a particle therapy machine is the dose delivery system which is responsible for guiding the beam and controlling the delivered dose. We implemented the logic used for processing of beam monitor measurements. A beam of fast charged particles ionizes the gas located in the beam monitor which enables the determination of beam characteristics and position. The implemented logic running on an FPGA chip calculates the beam position, width and rate of dose delivery from raw data periodically received from the beam monitor. The calculated beam characteristics are needed for correct beam guidance along the volume of the tumour and the assurance of correctly delivered dose. We tested the finished logic using test benches. The logic conforms to set requirements but will only be tested on an FPGA chip as soon as all the remaining dose delivery system logic is finished along with the dedicated simulator.
