CNC machines are used for applications such as engraving, milling, drilling and 3D
printing. CNC machines for soft materials can be assembled in self-construction for a
relatively low price. Cheap components are available online, and one can use various open
source projects during production. The thesis presents the development and production of a
low-cost CNC engraving machine-tool for engraving soft materials. In its development, the
machine has been designed with the housing based on aluminium profiles and laser-cut
aluminium elements. The control of the CNC machine was developed on the basis of an
open source software package grbl, which uses an Arduino microcontroller to generate
control signals. After fabrication and calibration of the machine, an automated process for
generating G-code from raster binary image files is designed. The results of measuring the
accuracy of the CNC machine, the method of optimizing the parameters of the program for
generating the G-code and the cost analysis of the entire project are presented.
