Abstract

Title:Ergonomic patient handling and analysis of four common transfers : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Nurses often help patients move. As the average body weight of patients is increasing, constantly working with them is also an increasing challenge. Improper work with the patient leaves consequences both on the patient's body and on the nurse performing the intervention. To avoid unnecessary damage to the locomotor system, especially the spine, neck and shoulders of nurses, we must learn the correct techniques of manipulating the patient and also use it to make the intervention as easy as possible for the patient and for us. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma thesis is to analyze four optimally performed patient transfers and to highlight the main elements of the analyzed transfers. Methods: We used the videography method to analyze the four selected videos. The obtained data was then arranged by sets of activities, environment, interactions, objects and users. From each video, we selected one example of a nurse or medical technician in which the position of his body deviated the most from the neutral. The position was then analyzed with REBA tool. Results: All selected positions were dangerous after the evaluation with the REBA tool. The selected position from the video, which shows help to the patient after falling from the floor back to the bed, was assessed with eight points, which places it among the positions with a high risk of musculoskeletal disorders. It was followed by a position from the video of the transfer from a sitting to a standing position, which was assessed with five points. Positions from patient assistance videos from lying to sitting position and transfer from bed to a wheelchair were rated with four points. All three fall into the category of moderately dangerous positions for the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders. As all the analyzed positions scored a high number of points, changes are needed in all of them. Discussion and conclusion: Despite the fact that we analyzed optimally performed transfers, we were still able to find positions that are among the risks for the development of musculoskeletal disorders. Constant attention to the correct execution of individual transfers and the most natural posture, in general, is of great importance for nurses. With ergonomic work, they can avoid many defects of the musculoskeletal system and thus ensure a quality life.
