Abstract
Pregled znanstvene literature o bioaktivnih snoveh v rodu mali zvonček je pokazal širok spekter uporabnih snovi in vsestranski potencial tega rodu.

Title:Bioactive compounds of genus Galanthus L. and their usefulness
Abstract:
The purpose of the diploma thesis was to present scientific findings on bioactive substances of the genus Galanthus L. and their usefulness. Alkaloids isolated from bulbs of many species of the genus, have been studied most closely, as the main utility of the studied genus is related to the alkaloid galantamine, which occurs in many members of the narcissus family (Amaryllidaceae) and is the basis for the development of a drug for Alzheimer's disease. The diploma thesis also includes a review of studies of some other bioactive substances: lectins, organic acids, phenolics and oxalates. The results of testing the activity of lectin from G. nivalis against feline coronavirus and the applicability of lectin in agriculture against nematodes are also presented in the diploma thesis. Due to the growing number of pests of cultivated plants resistant to plant protection products, the required amount of them can be harmful to human health. To this end, studies have been conducted using the alkaloid galantamine as an antidote for organophosphate poisoning. Substances with antioxidant activity, such as phenolics, also play an important role in human health. In the genus Galanthus, the content of phenolics was studied only in the species G. woronowii and it was shown that due to its high phenolic content and high antioxidative capacity this species has the potential of treating diseases caused by free radicals, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and liver disease. The review of scientific literature on bioactive compounds in the genus Galanthus revealed the broad spectrum of usable substances and versatile potential of this genus.
