Abstract

Title:Homeschooling
Abstract:
In the dissertation, we analyzed home schooling, which is occurring more and more frequently in Western societies. In recent years, Slovenia has seen an exponential increase in such education, which has been legally permissible since 1996. The modern mode of schooling at home appears at the same time as other late modern processes, such as individualisation and the imperative of reflexive self-formation. In the dissertation we shed light on the reasons, the motives and the goals of parents who teach their children at home, and we also paid special attention to the family in which, after all, home schooling takes place. To this end, we conducted a small qualitative research study in which we used semi-structured interviews to gather the necessary data. The study included 6 parents who educate their children at home. We note that home schooling is in accordance with the structural features of late modern societies and that parents choose this mode of education mainly for pedagogical reasons. In the educational process, parents are also guided by ethical and moral imperatives. Parents also report that homeschooling has positive impact on family ties. Children are taught at home mainly by mothers, who perceive education as an inherent part of the mother's role. In relation to this, actualization in the public sphere is secondary to them.
