Abstract

Title:The role of computational design in BIM : master thesis
Abstract:
The thesis addresses the role of computational design in BIM. The large use of BIM and the desire to respond more effectively to the construction requirements have diffuse new data management tools, such as Dynamo. In order to evaluate the role of such data management tools in modern BIM workflows the thesis study different applications of computational design. The thesis is organised in sections. The first section provides a theoretical overview of computational design and the second section illustrates its applications during the construction process phase. The third part focuses on the prefabrication industry and how new technologies can be beneficial to improve companies workflows. The final section illustrates a case study for the application of computational strategies to highlight the usefulness of a library of scripts, which have been developed to automatise repetitive procedures during construction processes. The application of visual programming into BIM tools gives new possibilities to create, manage and check geometrical and non-geometrical information in the digital model. The application phase of the thesis is focused on the management of non-geometrical information.
