Abstract

Title:Development of User Interfaces with an Anthropological Approach
Abstract:
The diploma thesis presents the interdisciplinary cooperation of anthropology in the development phases of new products and services. Anthropologists can contribute to analysis and improvement of user interfaces with a qualitative research approach. The main purpose of people-centered development is to include people in all stages of the research and development process. By using an approach that consists of four basic phases of people-centered development, we change the role from that of a passive user into an active co-creator. The inclusion of antrophologists in the development of technological solutions is described through concrete cases of such cooperation (Microsoft, Boeing, Intel, Xerox, DriveGreen, Eta). Anthropologists can also contribute to prototyping projects where they help in the development of improved solutions. However, their role is not mere participation in the creation of products and services. Anthropologists also conduct research of the complete design process, including both users and creators. The industry can make use of ethnography, which combines personal contacts and technologically supported methods. They range from the conventional participant observation to recording the lifestyles and habits by the means of modern technology and online data analysis. The thesis explains that there is an increasing number of anthropological employees in the business sector, where they carry out organizational, the provision of advice and research work. In Slovenia, most companies are not yet aware of the benefits that come with the recruitment of an expert in social sciences or humanities.
