Abstract
Diplomsko delo osvetljuje življenji Charlesa Dickensa in Donne Tartt ter se posveča primerjavi njunih romanov. Raziskuje značilnosti Bildungsromana v romanu Lišček Donne Tartt in romanu Veliko pričakovanje Charlesa Dickensa ter odgovarja na vprašanje, zakaj se je pisateljice prijel vzdevek »Dickens sodobnega časa«. Charles Dickens velja za ključnega pisatelja viktorijanske dobe, medtem ko je Donna Tartt sodobna ameriška pisateljica. Čeprav sta si časovno in prostorsko različna, imata tudi skupne točke. Podobnosti lahko opazimo pri njunem stilu pisanja. Ne uide jima nobena malenkost, zato so opisi izčrpni in natančni. Diplomsko delo je razdeljeno na dva dela. V prvem, teoretičnem delu je izpostavljena teorija Bildungsromana, v drugem delu pa se osredotoča na izbrana romana in njuno primerjavo. Za primerjavo je bilo ključno, da oba izpostavljena romana zaradi poteka zgodbe in razvoja protagonistov žanrsko sovpadata z Bildungsromanom.

Title:A Comparison of the Novels Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
Abstract:
This thesis highlights Charles Dickens’ and Donna Tartt’s lives and their work. Based on the theory of Bildungsroman, this thesis explores the characteristics of Bildungsroman in Donna Tartt’s novel The Goldfinch and Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. On top of that, it also explores the reason behind Tartt’s nickname »Dickens of modern times«. Charles Dickens is considered as a key writer of the Victorian era, while Donna Tartt is a contemporary American writer. Despite coming from different space and time, they have some things in common. These similarities can be noticed in their style of writing. They do not miss a single detail when writing, so their descriptions are thorough and precise. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is of a theoretical nature, where the theory of Bildungsroman is explained. And the second part is focoused on the chosen novels and their comparison. The key for comparions was that the both novels were written in Bildungsroman genre regarding the course of the stories and the main protagonists.
