Abstract

Title:Operation of »Dementia-Friendly Go-To Points« in the Savinjska Statistical Region
Abstract:
In the theoretical part of the master's thesis, I first presented the current attitudes of the society towards dementia, where I focus primarily on stigmatizing people with dementia and present ways and measures that could eventually develop a more dementia-friendly society. Then, I describe the needs of people with dementia and their relatives. I also present the role of social work in the field of dementia and describe different models of understanding dementia, where I especially highlight the social work model and the concept of empowerment. I conclude the theoretical part by presenting dementia-friendly points. The empirical part of the thesis is qualitative research in which I discuss the operation of dementia-friendly points in the Savinjska Statistical Region. I obtained the data through eight partially standardized interviews I conducted with employees, working at the previously mentioned points. With the research, I wanted to find out how dementia-friendly points really work in practice, what activities and services they perform, what problems are the people who seek help there faced with and how their needs are taken into account, how social work concepts are taken into account and what downsides improvements should be done to make the operation of the points even more efficient. Based on the results of this research, I found that dementia-friendly points are dominated by information and education services with an emphasis on content from the social aspect of dementia, while also paying attention to the concept of empowerment. The points are visited mainly by relatives of people with dementia, and their distress is mainly related to the lack of basic information about dementia and the forms of assistance available to them. Furthermore, they lack knowledge about other aspects of dementia (for instance: interpersonal relationships, communication, acceptance of illness, support for relatives). The downsides of the points are mostly evident in the organizational and implementation level. The employees feel that the support from the Spominčica Association isn't good enough, the premises are inadequate and the financing system is unsettled. In some places, they are also facing a poor response from the local community. In the end, I suggest that in addition to raising awareness, dementia-friendly points also focus on other activities. Additionally, they should expand their activities to the local and wider environment. I also suggest certain changes in the organizational structure of the points.
