The master’s thesis deals with the position and the historical background of the Aljaž Tower, one of the most important facilities in the Slovenian area, when in the 2nd half of the 19th century fighting between Slovenian and German mountain societies took place, for symbolic and proprietary management of the Slovenian highlands. In 1895, the conceptual creator of the tower, Jakob Aljaž, managed to provide the mountaineers with a solid shelter by constructing the tower at the Triglav summit and infringed the leading positions of the German political representatives and mountaineering societies. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and the transition to a new state formation, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the tower acquired a new role, representing a »battlefield« on which the »painting« wars took place among uninvited painters. Thus, the tower changed its color image several times during the two world wars. During the Second World War, the partisan movement recognized Triglav as a symbol of Slovenia. During the period of socialist Yugoslavia, the tower was given a new appearance, as it wore red and a star until the mid ‘80s. In 1999, after the independence of the Republic of Slovenia the tower was proclaimed a cultural monument of national importance, and soon after became a state property. In 2017, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia was declared as the land management of Triglav’s summit and the tower. A thorough three-week renovation began on September 7, 2018, ending on October 3, 2018, with the return and reinstallation of the tower.
