In February 1984, a Karavanke foehn caused a significant damage on a wide area of Gozdno gospodarstvo Bled. In total 230 000 m3 of timber needed salvaging. Assessment of forest restoration success after windthrow was performed in the area of Grofija (GGE Radovljica % levi breg Save, GGO Bled), where the concentration of damaged trees was the highest. The aim of assessment was to determine the success of forest restoration. Data from 192 permanent sample plots, terrain survey and data obtained from interviews of seven forestry service employees that participated in the restoration, was used. Results show the differences in stand parameters (growing stock, DBH structure, ingrowth, developmental stage, number of potential crop trees, past tending of the stand) between affected and unaffected forest stands. Significant differences on affected areas between naturally and artificially restored stands have not been found. The opinion of interviewed foresters is that the majority of affected area should have been left to the natural regeneration and funds used for planting should have been used for tending the natural regeneration.
