Abstract

Title:Proposition of Natura 2000 protection guidelines for honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus L.) habitats in forest management unit Banjšice forests
Abstract:
Nature conservation guidelines that are legislated are often set too widely. Thus are, due to lack of knowledge of animal and plant species and their environmental requirements, difficult to transform into specific forestry measures that would ensure the preservation of this species and their habitats. In the forests of forest management unit Banjšice the guidelines and measures for preservation of Honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus L.) were taken under a closer look within the Natura 2000 site. Suitable areas for Honey buzzards natural refuges were searched for with map analysis. On the area of 194 ha, seven special units were created. Within these units, further selection of smaller areas for natural refuges of total 16 ha (0.5 % of the Natura 2000 site) required, is possible. Within these natural refuges adjusted use of forest is possible to apply so that at least one to three adult trees per refuge are left in the stand. At the same time these natural refuges are also suitable for Honey buzzard nesting sites. A management plan for the special units was made and detailed instructions for establishing natural refuges were included. The management plan can be included into Banjšice forest management units forest management plan. In case of increased interest for forest use by the forest owners is re-established in the area, the management plan can be used as a basis for detailed sylviculture plan that will ensure that measures for providing adequate Honey buzzards habitats are taken into account.
