Abstract

Title:Influence of ungulate browsing on natural regeneration after windthrow in Trnovski gozd
Abstract:
The frequency of natural disturbances is increasing due to climate change. Therefore, damages in forests occur more regularly and with greater magnitude. In addition, after disturbances the spatial distribution of ungulates is irregular which leads to unevenly distributed food sources and therefore inhibition of the natural regeneration of forests. This study focuses on the influence of ungulates browsing on natural regeneration after windthrow in Trnovski gozd. The efficiency of fencing natural regeneration was analysed. Field inventory was performed in a forest management unit Predmeja on two sites where we established 40 plots outside and 40 plots inside the fence. The results show that there was no herbivore grazing and that the densities of natural regeneration were higher in fenced areas.
