Abstract

Title:Energy supply potentials and possibilities of the estate of the Faculty of Agriculture in Maribor with self-produced biomass
Abstract:
The Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences is engaged in agricultural and forestry activities. Its' estate is separated into two units: the first unit is located in the vicinity of Hompoš castle above Hoče, the second one on Meranovo hill above Limbuš. Both locations have potentials and possibilities for fuel wood production using agriculture and forestry resources. The potential of fuel wood energy can be derived from lower quality wood primarily obtained from silviculture works, and forest residues generated from regular logging operations. It can also be derived from agricultural sources: pruning wood from vineyards and orchards, wood residues from grubbing before restoration, and those from cleaning melioration ditches. Currently, the main energy products used by the Faculty are heating oil, liquefied petroleum gas and electricity. Only a small portion of energy is generated from fuel wood, namely woodchips. It is therefore reasonable to look for other options. One of them is installing cogeneration systems, which provide both heat and electric power. In order to meet the energy needs, two separate systems have to be installed, one for each estate unit. Although this requires high investment costs, the results of financial evaluations are favorable. The energy supply from self-produced fuel wood is sufficient to meet all the energy needs of the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
