Abstract
Namen magistrske naloge je raziskati, kako se idiomi prevajajo iz angleškega jezika v slovenski jezik ter analizirati težave, s katerimi se je med postopkom prevajanja srečal prevajalec. V teoretičnem delu naloge so predstavljene štiri teme: Agatha Christie in analizirana knjiga Pet prašičkov, detektivski žanr, prevajanje in frazeologija s poudarkom na idiomih.

Title:Idioms and Their Slovene Translations in the Novel Five Little Pigs by Agatha Christie
Abstract:
The main objective of this MA thesis is to research how idioms are translated from the English language into the Slovene language and analyse the difficulties the translator has encountered during the translation process. In the theoretical part of the thesis, four main topics are discussed: Agatha Christie and the analysed novel Five Little Pigs, detective fiction, translation and phraseology and idioms. The idiomatic expressions that were analysed in the empirical part were collected from Agatha Christie’s book Five Little Pigs (2015) and compared to their translations in the Slovene version of the book Pet prašičkov (2018) that was translated by Gregor Moder. Translated idioms are categorized into four groups based on the translation method used: source-language (SL) idioms that are translated with literal target-language (TL) idioms (idioms of similar meaning and form), SL idioms that are translated with non-literal TL idioms (idioms of similar meaning but different form), SL idioms that are translated with non-idiomatic paraphrases, and SL idioms that are omitted from the translation. Each group of idioms is thoroughly discussed and better translations of idiomatic expressions are provided for those that were improperly translated. The results show that the translation strategy that was used the most frequently was paraphrasing, followed by translation with idioms of similar meaning but different form. Overall, the majority of idioms are properly translated so that they retain the meaning of the original expression. There are only two instances where a SL idiom was omitted from the translation and two where major translation mistakes occurred.
