Abstract

Title:
Use of pedometers for monitoring the activity level in a group of elderly
Abstract:
The purpose of present study was to determine the comfortability of pedometer use and to determine the amount and intensity of physical activity in the elderly living at home and those who live in the nursing home. Methods: 15 elder adults who live at home and 15 those who live in nursing home were enrolled. Balance was assessed with the Berg balance scale, and activity level was monitored with pedometer for one week. Results: subjects who live at home achieve on average 14 points more at the Berg balance scale as compared to the subjects who live in nursing home (55.7 ± 0.5 41.7 ± 4.9 points, respectively). The community dwelling elderly made on average 2.9 times more steps per day than those from nursing home. Community dwellers were engaged in high intensity activities for 3.1 % of time and moderate activity level 9.1 whereas nursing home residents 0.7 and 3.4 % respectively. Conclusions: Pedometers are very simple to measure physical activity in elder adults. Those who live at home made significantly more steps per day and were longer active with higher intensity.
