Introduction: Gait velocity depends on several factors and muscle performance is one of them. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the endurance of the calf muscle and the walking speed in elderly women. Methods: Twenty-six women at the average age of 68.85 (± 6.18) years participated in the study. Two functional tests were compared, the 10-meter walk test (preferred and fast velocity) and the one-leg heel-rise test. Maximal number of heel rises was counted. Results: There was a good correlation between the number of heel rises and fast walking speed (r = 0.509) while there was no correlation between the number of heel rises and comfortable walking speed (r = 0.272). Conclusion: The endurance of calf muscles is related to the fast walking speed in a group of healthy elderly women, therefore we recommend the use of endurance exercises as a part of balance and gait specific exercises programs.
