Abstract

Title:Compost bedded pack barns for suckler cows in terms of health and welfare
Abstract:
Compost bedded pack barns are a relatively new type of housing, the system of which is only establishing in our country. The interest in this housing system in Slovenia is growing mainly due to the good experience overseas farmers have with such stables. On the base of available scientific literature on this subject, we examined the characteristics of the compost bedded pack barn. In the thesis, we presented the basic construction features of the compost bedded pack barn, the need for space, bedding and work operations in it, including daily compost stirring, bedding addition and compost bed cleanout. The process of composting organic matter with animal secretions is also presented in greater detail. Among that, the necessary mechanization for compost stirring and types of beddings, which can be used in such a system, are also described. The aspect of hygiene, health and welfare of cows in the stable is also presented. We also mentioned the effects of compost barn on the environment, possible economic considerations and the quality of compost as a fertilizer. Breeding of suckler cows is widespread mainly in areas with limited conditions for farming, where summer grazing is prevailing. The stables are thus largely unused and empty during the grazing season. The thesis describes examples of good practice, in which the compost bedded pack barn is also used during the grazing season with the fattening of pigs and vegetable production.
