Abstract

Title:The use of improvisational theatre techniques in teaching the Italian language and art history
Abstract:
In the thesis I research the use of techniques of improvisational (improv) theatre while teaching the Italian language and art history. In the theoretical part I describe improv theatre and its main principles, as well as some characteristics of how it is taught and the effects it brings. I present some pedagogical and didactical theories which recommend the teaching methods typical for improv theatre. Among them are an opposition between transmissive and transformative teaching, theories about different cognitive and learning styles, Gardner’s theory on multiple intelligences, and constructivism. I also focus on the questions of creativity and motivation. I propose some concrete ideas how to include improv into lessons of both subjects mentioned above; I base my suggestions on the two corresponding curriculums. In the second part of the thesis I present some cases from my practice where I incorporated the described methods into my teaching lessons. I introduce different ways of their application, followed by a comparison of the results they brought to different classes. I conclude the thesis with the results of the practical part, summing it up with the most important elements improv theatre can offer to the practice of teaching both chosen school subjects, and elsewhere.
