Due to the unpredictable conditions at sea, which can be of human, environmental or technical nature, the crew, as well as the passengers, must be able to evacuate the ship at any time during the voyage. My thesis begins with a theoretical explanation of the general evacuation, to which I added the specification of the maritime aspect. International maritime regulations regarding the evacuation of a ship have been defined and summarized. I described the process of evacuating a ship and its four phases and outlined the different types of life-saving appliances and vessels. Even though the ship may be perfect in terms of evacuation, there are still human factors to be considered. Several behaviours that influence evacuation times are explained and evacuation is simulated by explaining the main three models used in the software. The software used for this was Pathfinder. I made an attempt to evacuate people from a confined space and compared the time between different scenarios.
