Abstract

Title:Biotic control of invasive plants
Abstract:
Invasive plants represent a global problem. Due to their favourable traits they are capable of outcompeting the native plant species. Invasive plats thrive well in degraded areas; their presence is problematic for agriculture and economy and some of them pose a threat even for human and animal health. Biological control is just one of possibilities to control the invasives, but it is potentially more environmentally friendly and enables long-term solution. Biological control is based on introduction of a biotic agent that affects specifically the invasive plant and helps to reduce its population below the invasive threshold. Safety and efficiency of biological control are very important. Knowledge of the biotic agent that is introduced and its environmental effects is very important to prevent the negative influences. The introduced agent may have negative effect on native plants or might act as a competitor to other organisms present in the ecosystem. A well-prepared biological control program, thoroughly tested for its safety and effectiveness, can be well used to reduce the population of a selected invasive plant.
