Abstract

Title:Orientalism as a strategy of control of the Other
Abstract:
The intention of this diploma work is to establish the true origin of a complex relationship between West and East, Orient, roots of unevenness between countries colonisators and colonized countries in the area of Middle East respectively. Who is »the Other«, East and how we have managed to not only construct it though a discourse, but furthermore fabricate it whereas hate towards »the Other« escalated in a very specific object, Islam that is. If orientalism truly is a political, economic and cultural establishment, then latent orientalism is an inherent part of a psychological apparatus of each Westerner (in Fanon's particular case even each white person). Despite of criticism of Said and his Orientalism, there is a great value at listening to a man who apart from being a friend to Arafat, also held a role at Palestinian national movement, until its partial interests deeply disappointed him. His lifetime effort was to point out the ungrateful position of »the Other« whom he often identified with, in particular in his last work, a memoir »Out of place«.
