Abstract

Title:Violence in new religious movements and ''brain washing'': the case of the Peoples Temple
Abstract:
In the present dissertation i am dealing with violence in new religious movements, where i expose a case of violent religious movement Peoples Temple. Certainly mass suicide of nearly thousand left the biggest mark among the public. In dissertation i was trying to show, that a mass suicide commited by members of religious movement Peoples Templecan be explained trough factors that influence the fenomenon of violence in new religious movements. I focused on factors that comprise of carisma, apocalypticism and a network of outer and inner factors aas well as societal and cultural factors. Besides the premise of violence, that i tried to apply on the case of Peoples Temple i also tried to explain the incident trough written theories about so called "brain washing" or more accurately about "sectarian brain washing". With comprehensive information about what went on within the community i tried to depict inner workings of Peoples Temple, aswell as conditions in the movement. Method of "brain washing ", although not accepted in sociology as scientificaly sound method, seems to be preety much on the spot in this case. Trough explaining these theories and transfering the findings to the case of Peoples Temple, some paraleles emerge, that could bring closer the explanation of the event from this point of view.
