Introduction: Injuries from motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. Proper use of seatbelts has been shown to significantly reduce the consequences and extent of injuries from road traffic accidents. Research has shown that the use of seatbelt during pregnancy is a public health problem, mainly because of the lack of knowledge and information. Midwives play an important role in the counseling and treatment of pregnant women. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to review the literature on the topic of traffic accidents during pregnancy. The goal of the thesis is to determine the impact of the seat-belt use in the case of a traffic accident during the pregnancy. Furthermore, we would like to define the role of midwives in preventing serious consequences of motor-vehicle accidents. Methods: For this thesis, we used the descriptive method of non-empiric research which was based on a review of scientific and professional literature. We searched the literature in English and Slovene language in the databases of COBISS, ScienceDirect, Medline, DiKul, CINAHL, Google Scholar, Google Books, SAGE, Scopus, Wiley Online Library, and Cochrane. Results: The proper use of seatbelts during pregnancy reduces maternal and perinatal mortality. Midwives play an important role in giving the latest information and promoting traffic safety for pregnant women. Discussion and conclusion: The research has shown that the treatment of injured pregnant women is a special challenge for all healthcare professionals. A large percentage of pregnant women think that during pregnancy they did not receive enough information about the correct way of using seatbelts. This topic should, therefore, be added to other topics on the healthy lifestyle during pregnancy that is presented to women at the time of pregnancy planning or at the first examination in pregnancy, by midwives and other health professionals.
