My BA thesis focuses on a very specific period of fine art, which opened the door wide open to the abstract art. In a series of paintings, known as composition and improvisation, Vassily Kandinsky left a special imprint and discourse on the proven link between music and painting. While creating his works he came across, the same as I, the concept of synesthesia. Furthermore, he encountered something even more abstract that was certainly not befitting of or used in painting, particularly in his time of fine art, i.e. improvisation. First of all, I shall attempt to clarify, as precisely as possible, the notions that links up my entire thesis. Theoretically, I shall explain, both from the aspect of music and painting, the various views and opinions already substantiated by the experts in the aforementioned spheres. Where needed, I shall also add my own opinion and comment on which particular problems and questions I am faced with while painting, which particular insights were reached by myself or during writing my thesis, and from which insights I deviate or interpret them in my own way. Apart from figurative expression and explaining the works of Vassily Kandinsky, the painter with whom I find it easiest to explain and compare my work process, I shall also talk about jazz.
I believe that Kandinsky made a huge step forward towards abstraction and that after a century he can be considered a person who reached a high value of art and that he can be looked upon as on antique. I myself have come to the conclusion that I totally inadvertently waded into completely the same problems which, however, I managed to solve and prove to myself that all that uncertainty and theoretical deviation is justifiable, given that the notions such as emotion and improvisation cannot be pointed at with a finger, let alone be caught in a moment or converted into colours on canvas. Likewise, I always wanted to explain to myself that a strong bond exists between music and colour which, unfortunately, is spoiled by various attempts at “drawing the music”, which conceal the unclear and complex path I myself have been dedicated to and believe that I successfully created an interesting series of artworks.
