Abstract

Title:
Gender Representation in Contemporary Dance in Slovenia and in Portugal
Abstract:
This master’s thesis deals with the topic of gender representation in contemporary dance performances in Slovenia and in Portugal. It begins with a presentation of different sociological theories of gender and the body and describes the development of contemporary dance in general as well as in Portugal and in Slovenia. The empirical part comprises of an analysis of dance performances by some of the most important figures of contemporary dance in each country. The analysis shows that there are some performances that deal with gender and gender expectation in an interesting way, but most performances stick to the common practices and the exploration and the questioning of these practices are rare.
