Abstract

Title:Motifs of mental disorders in the novels American Psycho and Fight Club, their film adaptations, and reception in Slovenia
Abstract:
The master’s thesis Motifs of mental disorders in the novels American Psycho and Fight Club, their film adaptations, and reception in Slovenia addresses two novels that are similar in some respects - both can be classified into the genre of delinquent literature, both of their authors are American, and their time of origin is similar as well, since the original novel American Psycho was released in 1991, while Palahniuk's debut was released in 1996; but particularly, both works feature a first-person narrator with a mental disorder, therefore, the line between sanity and insanity is blurred to some extent, which makes the narrator unreliable. The motive of mental disorders is faithfully conveyed in the film adaptations of the aforementioned novels American Psycho (2000) and Fight Club (1999). The paper also discusses the reception of both of these film adaptations and their literary bases in Slovenia.
