Abstract

Title:Expression of children's patterns of emotional regulation, attachment and behavior in sandplay counseling
Abstract:
The purpose of the master's thesis was to determine how patterns of emotional regulation, attachment through behavior and play with sand are reflected in children who have experienced early trauma (neglect) and consequently how these children are changing in terms of treatment. We were interested in whether the treatment of children with similar experiences needs a special approach based on safety and play in which such children have the opportunity to direct the play themselves, to have a sense of control in the play and to express what they come to meeting without directing a play. We were also wondered whether treatment of emotional expression and behavior, along with the addressing early trauma and patterns of attachment, changes in the behavior itself and the emotional expression of the child, as well as in the patterns of attachment. Qualitative research was conducted using the case study methodology. We found that in a free non-direct play, which was available to the girl through the entire fifteen meetings, the girl expressed her emotional difficulties and challenges in through sandplay, projected and played her early traumas, and through the game illustrated all the challenges which she is currently facing. Gradually, through the creation of a secure support environment and a relationship with a researcher, addressing early traumas in the presence of a safe object (foster parent), the girl has gradually succeeded in changing her behavioral responses and patterns of attachment along with the ability to better regulate feelings.
