Abstract

Title:A Contrastive Analysis of Slovenian film, DVD and television subtitles of the US movie Behind the Candelabra
Abstract:
Using contrastive analysis this master's thesis analyzes Slovenian subtitles of the US movie Behind the Candelabra, directed by Steven Soderbergh, 2013. It studies the differences between the film, DVD and television subtitles. The audience’s first contact with a movie usually happens at the cinema, where more text can be captured in subtitles because of the possibility of a higher reading speed. Movie showing on television provides for the viewers a second contact with a movie. As this also makes it accessible to literate children, adults may expect subtitles not to contain vulgar language. We expect that the Slovene film and DVD subtitles contain fewer omissions and condensations, less restrained translation of profane language and gay expressions as well as to be longer in terms of content than the television subtitles. The findings may be helpful in training translators for cinema, DVD and television subtitling as well as used in translation practice.
